the perfect peach - peach galette

For the second recipe out of The Perfect Peach book, I choose the cover recipe - the peach galette. This one was easy to veganize - almond milk instead of regular, earth balance butter instead of regular, flax seed egg instead of regular. I made mini-hand pie versions for dessert. After a heavy dinner, we decided to each only eat half the galette - so here's the other half, for an afternoon snack (with an extra peach, of course). I added pluots, and golden cherries to the peaches for the innards. Delish!

meatless monday - making dog biscuits

2 cups carrot pulp (leftover from our juicer)
1 mushy banana
1 scoop peanut butter (about a half cup)
1/2 cup oatmeal (or until dough not sticky)

mush into paste, scoop onto pan, and squish down flat.

bake at 300 for half hour, flip over, and bake 300 for another half hour.
turn oven down to 200, bake until crispy (morris likes them slightly soft) - takes about 2 hours.

spinning sunday - dye your own fiber edition

I bought some plain white fiber from Rumplestiltskin the last time I was in the bay area. I didn't know what to do with it - originally, I was going to spin it and then dye it. But I love the way the yarn looks when it's dyed beforehand - it's so random and multi colored. So I wrapped the 4oz of wool in a pot, in a circular motion (to try to make it more random), and dropped in dye at different spots. <----This is the finished product.

I decided to fractal ply it, to hopefully preserve the brightness. You'll see more next week!

the perfect peach

peaches!!
mixing! looks like cereal.. mmm.
Jefferson brought me home this new cookbook from the Masumoto family. He's reviewing the book for Fresno Life Magazine, and was able to sneak away with a press copy.

The cookbook seems very lovely, and filled with (duh) peach recipes. I can't wait to go through and "veganize" each and every one of them (except the ones that can't really be veganized - i.e. peach/mozzarella, peach/prosciutto).

food processor mixing is the best!

I started today with peach scones. Earlier, in the Fresno Bee, there was a yummy photo (but no recipe!) of apricot scones, and I've been craving scones all day. I stopped at WF on the way home from school to get some peaches/apricots.

dough!
I only had to make a few adaptations to the recipe - I used fresh peaches instead of dried, soy milk instead of whole milk, earth balance instead of butter, and flax seed egg instead of regular egg. I also used all whole wheat flour - so after it was all mixed, I let it sit for a half hour. Whole wheat flour takes longer to soak up the wet ingredients. (Thanks, America's Test Kitchen!)

In the photos you'll be able to see how I folded it into a disk (if you've never made scones before), and the before/after cooking photos. MMMMM.

peach scones! all done!
Next time, I think I'll use yellow peaches (I like white peaches better, but I think yellow ones cook better), and a little bit of orange zest.

meatless monday!

Today I made my favorite dish (and maybe Jefferson's "tolerable" dish) which means all the vegetables I have in the fridge wrapped in a tortilla.

Today's wrap: a whole wheat tortilla, burned around the edges. smashed avocado. sauteed zucchini and crookneck squash with onions, red peppers, shittake mushrooms, and garlic. topped with lettuce, and trader joe's brand chickenless strips.

Jefferson's was slightly different - hummus instead of avocado, and no broccoli.

from the top. looks like a salad.
innards!!

spinning sunday

I finally finished that 4oz merino. Here is a photo of the second color, and the first + second bobbins. Yarn photo is dark, I realize. I'll post a better one later. I haven't measured the thickness yet (I imagine it's DK-ish) but it's 240 yards.
